While the Gr3 Tommy Hotspur Handicap takes feature billing at Turffontein on Saturday, a R4 million Cape Premier Yearling Sale graduate will have her own interested observers when she makes her debut against winners in the third race on the same programme..
The Alec Laird-trained Frankly was the leader of four lots averaging R2,1 million that made their world champion Dad Frankel the leading sire by average at the 2017 Cape Premier Yearling Sale
All four yearlings were consigned by Klawervlei Stud and Frankly, a bay filly out of Irish-bred Little Fastnet, was the quartet topseller at R4 million to American agent Justin Casse.
Little Fastnet’s dam Damson was champion 2yo in Ireland. Amanda Skiffington bought Frankly’s Silvano half-sister for R3 million at the 2018 Cape Premier Yearling last month.
Trainer Alec Laird, who is not a regular commenter on first-timers, kindly provided the following observation on Frankly’s prospects to Gold Circle’s Warren Lenferna:
“Frankly is not a big filly – I wouldn’t be running her if she wasn’t working quite well. She is an expensive horse – I don’t normally run two year olds. Please note too that I am not taking on winners to get clever – the timing just worked out that way. Based on her work she will not disgrace herself. I have not tried her properly, but on her work I am confident she can put up a bold showing and,of course, I am hoping for a win but am not counting on it. There is another race for her in about three weeks’ time and I would also like to get some black type for her in time to come.”
