One Ride For Marcus At Kenilworth

R2 million Jackson daughter will have her supporters

The bang in-form Anton Marcus flies in to Cape Town on Saturday for one ride and his first official race riding commitment for his new sponsors Highlands, part of Ridgemont.

Marcus, who has made a superb start to the new season, took up his contract with the Kieswetter family’s powerful operation from 1 August and has won on 6 of his 12 rides this term.

He partners the Brett Crawford trained first-timer Water Spirit on her debut in the second race.

The Highlands bred daughter of Jackson was a R2 million purchase by Crawford off the 2017 Cape Premier Yearling Sale. She is out of the twice winning Western Winter mare, Undine, who won at 1000m.

In media reports, Brett Crawford has suggested that despite the early betting indicators, he feels that Water Spirit could run into the quartets – if she jumps on terms over the 1200m and is not too green in running.

Her major opposition could come from the Andre Nel filly Vomandla, who will be ridden by Highlands-Ridgemont’s longstanding rider, Greg Cheyne. The daughter of Sail From Seattle showed well on debut over the course and distance last month when narrowly beaten by Durty Nelly.

Justin Snaith and Richard Fourie have made a flying start to the season and they could have a good day at the office with some outstanding opportunities.

The Kenilworth Pick 6 gets boosted by a carryover of R200 000 and gets under way in the third race at 14h30. The estimated pool is expected to reach R1.1 million.
