Two more exciting young Cape sires to have their first local runners this weekend are Varsfontein Stud’s Gimmethegreenlight and Drakenstein Stud’s Philanthropist.
Both stallions have their first representatives at Scottsville on Sunday when Count Philip (Philanthropist) and Skip The Red (Gimmethegreenlight) will clash in the Download the SA App Maiden Juvenile Plate.

The colts were bred by Patricia Devine (Count Philip) and Nadeson Park (Skip The Red) respectively.
Gimmethegreenlight was an exceptionally precocious horse who won his first four races at two, including the Listed Somerset 1200m.
Gimmethegreenlight – first runner at Scottsville on Sunday
The handsome Australian bred trained on well to win South Africa’s premier 1600m contest, the G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate, at three, where Gimmethegreenlight’s beaten rivals included subsequent dual Horse Of The Year Variety Club.
In total, Gimmethegreenlight won or placed in 12 of his 13 outings and earned more than R1.6 million, with his placed efforts including a third to champion Igugu in the G1 J&B Met.
He is an exceptionally well bred horse, being a son of G1 King’s Bishop winner and multiple champion sire More Than Ready. The latter, whose sire sons include highly successful Australian stallion Sebring, has over 140 stakes winners to his credit, including 19 individual G1 winners the world over. More Than Ready’s tally of G1 winners include last season’s Equus Champion 2YO Filly Entisaar.
Like champion sire Redoute’s Choice, Gimmethegreenlight is out of a mare by G1 Golden Slipper hero Canny Lad and he is a half brother to G1 Coolmore Classic winner Ofcourseican. The latter has a Sebring colt (three parts brother to Gimmethegreenlight) on offer at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
While Gimmethegreenlight is as yet unproven, Philanthropist is a proven success.
Last year’s Champion Sire on Synthetics in North America, Philanthropist is currently second on that list, with his North American runners have earned in excess of $2 million in 2015.

The blue blooded son of Kris S (whose sire sons also include the increasingly influential stallion Arch) was a smart racehorse himself whose wins included the G3 Queens County Handicap. However, it is at stud that Philanthropist has truly made his mark.
From a small first crop, Philanthropist left behind such outstanding individuals as champions Pender Harbour and Phil’s Dream, as well as the ill-fated Hippolytus, runner up in Canada’s classic Queen’s Plate.
Other smart stakes winners sired by Philanthropist include Bear It’s Time, Eff Bee Eye and Grace Phil, while Philanthropist 2yo Mike (himself a record breaking yearling buy) recently made a smart winning debut in Canada and looks a smart sort for 2016.
Philanthropist comes from a female line which has had plenty of success in South Africa- the chestnut star’s relatives including Equus Champion and multiple G1 winner Majmu as well as Highlands Farm’s highly successful sire National Assembly. The latter left behind 16 individual G1 winners including the successful sire and broodmare sire National Emblem. This is also the female line of promising US sire Gone Astray, currently one of the top ten first crop stallions in North America.
