Black Caviar’s 2016 filly foal by Snitzel
Champion race mare Black Caviar gave birth to her third foal at about 12:40am on Sunday, 18 September 2016. Retired trainer Peter Moody Tweeted a picture of the doting mum with her newborn on Sunday morning, adding “Well done, big girl.”
In an interview with Racing.com’s Racing Ahead on RSN 927, co-owner Neil Werrett, who was present for the birth which took place at an undisclosed location in the Hunter Valley, confirmed that it had all been straightforward and that both the mare and foal were doing well. “It’s always good to have them come out fit and well and mum’s doing really good.”
“She’s very protective of her progeny. Trying to get photos of her progeny is pretty difficult, because every time you try and take one, she’d move in front of it to protect it. She’s as good a mum as she was a racehorse – she’s just fantastic. The whole thing is no trouble to her.
Werrett reiterated that the owners had no plans to sell any of the progeny. “All the owners, none of us have even discussed the possibility of selling. We’re all keen racegoers, and we just love being able to race the progeny. Hopefully one or two of them may win a race or two. Going forward, having the breeding lines to her, is very important for us and racing going forward. I don’t know why you’d want to sell when you try to buy a nice horse, and we’ve [already] got some really nice foals going forward.”

Black Caviar’s new filly foal, by Arrowfield Stud’s Snitzel is the third foal for the unbeaten champion mare.
Her first foal, born in 2014, was a filly by Exceed And Excel and has been named Oscietra (a type of black caviar). The filly is currently in pre-training and an announcement on who will train her is expected in the next fortnight. However, it has been confirmed that she will be trained in Victoria.
In 2015 Black Caviar foaled an as yet unnamed Sebring colt, nicknamed ‘Little Cav’.

Bred by Rick Jamieson at Gilgai Farm in Victoria, Black Caviar (Bel Esprit – Helsinge) was purchased by Peter Moody for $210,000 at the 2008 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale. Black Caviar raced in the interests of G.J. Wilkie, K.J. Wilkie, Werrett Bloodstock Pty Ltd, C.H. Madden, J. Madden, P.A. Hawkes, D.M. Taylor, J. Taylor and was unbeaten in 25 career starts, of which 15 were at Gr1 level.
Black Caviar made her final racecourse appearance at the Gr1 TJ Smith Stakes in April 2013 before retiring to stud, having amassed $7,953,936 in prize money.
In 2012, her half-brother known as Jimmy (Redoute’s Choice-Helsinge) sold for a record price of $5 million, but died of a spider bite before reaching the race track.
