The Ferraris family may have rewritten the record books again at Scottsville on Saturday when Grandfather Ormond saddled a winner for his owner-trainer son David – ridden by the latter’s son apprentice jockey Luke.
Whether it’s any kind of record or not, the exploits of the 4kg claimer 16 year old Luke Ferraris have caught the public imagination ever since he opened his career account at the Vaal on Tuesday, 24 April with a double – both winners trained by his Grandfather Ormond.
On Derby Day at Scottsville, Luke won on Shukamisa in the familiar white and blue of the Dimakogiannis family and rounded off on Autumn Rain in the final event of the day in his Dad’s white and orange silks. He now has 17 winners to his name – in double quick time!
The famous family were at it just a fortnight ago – Sunday 10 June to be precise – when David saddled a double at Sha Tin, followed by Luke riding his 14th career winner at Turffontein. At the same venue a few hours later, Grandpa Ormond saddled the last winner of the day.
That three generation winning feat could be another record of sorts!
A senior statesmen of our training ranks, Ormond took out his licence in 1952.
His son David has been a trainer since 1995 and has four SA champion trainer titles and back to back July wins with Super Quality and Classic Flag on his CV. David relocated to Hong Kong in the 2003/04 season and has been there ever since.
