A colt by Drakenstein Stud’s red hot resident sire Philanthropist proved the star turn on day one of the 2016 Sibaya KZN Yearling Sale, which got underway at Sibaya Casino on Thursday. Consigned by Highlands Farm, the session topping colt, already named Graham’s Fame, was knocked down to prominent owner, Mario Ferreira for R1 050 000.
Day’s top seller – Lot 82, a handsome Philanthropist colt
The handsome colt (lot 82) is out of a winning daughter of Highlands’ late, great sire National Assembly, who, like Philanthropist, is a direct descendant of legendary broodmare Grey Flight. This is the same family as leading sires Sovereign Dancer and What A Pleasure, as well as one of history’s very greatest champions and outstanding sire -Native Dancer.
Graham’s Fame’s popularity also continued the tremendous year that Philanthropist has enjoyed in the sales ring -with his yearlings fetching up to R1.1 million at the 2016 National Yearling Sale.
Philanthropist has been enjoying a sensational spell of late, with his local first crop runners firing all on cylinders, and his overseas gallopers including a sensational stakes winning filly in Hot Kiss. The latter recently made it five wins on the bounce when she ran out a facile winner of the Trillium Stakes and looks a natural candidate for graded stakes honours.
Philanthropist (Kris S – Hidden Reserve)
Philanthropist, whose sire, Kris S, is one of the very best sire sons of the legendary Roberto, also enjoyed his sixth South African first crop winner, when his beautifully bred 2yo daughter Tipping Point made a winning debut at Durbanville on Wednesday. The filly powered home to beat the regally bred Exceed And Excel filly Sandy Bay over 1200m, and she looks a really smart filly in the making.
The red hot Philanthropist is also responsible for Sail, who rates a leading chance in Saturday’s G2 Gold Circle Golden Slipper on Vodacom Durban July day. This talented Dennis Drier trained filly has won two of three starts to date and is yet another well above average runner to have emerged from her sire’s exciting first South African crop.
Glen Kotzen bought this lovely filly – lot 90
The top priced filly of the day was consigned by Boland Stud and was bought by Paarl-based Glen Kotzen.
He went to R500 000 for lot 90, an unnamed daughter of Champion sire Captain Al, out of the Silvano mare, Hidden Silver.
