Deputy Takes Charge

Vaal 13th October: A maiden plate over 1450m got proceedings underway at Tuesday’s sand track meeting and here it was nice to see the 5yo BATTLE OF ARCOLE gain just reward for his consistency. Soon up handy, the Mogok gelding took up the running 500m out and won well by a length and a half.
Another son of Mogok to gain reward for his efforts at this meeting was the 3yo MAGIC in maiden company over 1000m. A runner up to some good sorts in six of his last seven outings, Leon Erasmus’ charge raced fifth for most of the journey. He ran on best of all over the final 400m and comfortably accounted for BOOGALOO by a length and three quarters.
There were three races run over 1000m in total and the fastest of these was the MR76 Handicap won by SLICK DEPUTY. Allowed to drift right out to 7/1 from 4’s at the track, despite having won well last time out, the Go Deputy mare was positioned at the back going through halfway. Once given rein though she finished best of all, and won going away by three and a half after striking the front 150m or so from home.
By far the faster of the two 1800m races was the MR78 Handicap won by the veteran COMMODORE AL. Another to ease a little in the betting market, the 7yo made all. He began to assert his authority going through the 400m and went on to score with authority by five.
Titbits
LA TASCA ran on well from the rear when only beaten a length in the MR68 Handicap over 1000m.

Three From Five

Greyville 14th October: They raced on the poly track on Wednesday where victory in the fastest of the three 1600m races went to the progressive EXIT HERE in the MR86 Handicap. Seeking a hat-trick here, the son of Jay Peg was taken straight to the front by Anton Marcus and led throughout. He was always in command and won well by a length and three quarters. Exit Here has now won three from five.
There was also three races run over 1200m and quickest home amongst these was CUNNING FOX in the MR74 affair. Not the quickest into stride when the gates opened, Andre Nel’s charge could be sighted at the back of the twelve early on. Once in the short home straight though he quickened best of all and under a well-judged ride from Kelvin Jupp he got up late to beat the much more fancied BUDAPEST by a length and a quarter.
The Western Cape based trainer Dean Kannemeyer has been in very good form in KZN in recent months and he was on the mark here when the heavily supported MR WINSOME did the business in the maiden plate over 1800m. Deep in the red at 5/10 on the off (op 18/10), the 3yo son of Silvano was always handy. He ran on stoutly over the final 400m and with the rest well beaten he got the better of his only serious rival in the betting market TEAM GUYS (5/2 out to 5/1) by three quarters.
Titbits
The newcomer JAMA was running on strongly late when third in the maiden plate over 1200m.

Magic Party

Turffontein 15th October: Thursday’s action took place on the inner track where victory in the fastest of the three 1800m events went to PARTY MAGIC in the MR76 Handicap. Allowed to drift as if a win was out of the question at the track (8/1 out to 20/1), the Indigo Magic mare raced in midfield for most of the journey. She took closer order coming off the strip and got up nicely late to deny the 3/1 favourite GAIN GROUND.
In terms of prizemoney a MR84 Handicap for 3yo’s over 1800m topped the bill and in a time almost a second and a half slower than that of Party Magic, OFF TO GAUL registered his second career victory. The six runners were always very tightly bunched and nicely positioned in fourth Joey Soma’s charge was always poised to strike. He ran on strongly when the race developed into a sprint 400m out and won well from the 13/20 favourite SAMURAI BLADE by a length.
Quickest home over 1600m was M L JET in graduation event. Sent off a strong favourite at 12/10, Gavin Van Zyl’s charge made the running. He was briefly headed by ANJAAL going through the 400m and fought on doggedly after regaining the lead shortly afterwards to beat MASTER ‘N COMMANDER by a half.
Titbits
WILL PAYS ran on well from off the pace when getting up late to win the MR80 Handicap over 1000m.

The Inspiring Story Of Dr Marianne Thomson

‘I am writing this as an older, small breeder and in our language, Markus, because this is our war. If I phoned you, I’d be overwhelmed by business jargon within a minute. What makes you so angry that you don’t care what you are doing to our shaky industry? How do you deal with this in your inner, quiet self?’
