Empress Club – Stake Increased To R1,25 Million

Save the date - 16 April 2022

The Racehorse Owners Association together with 4Racing have announced the running of the Gr1 HSH Princes Charlene Empress Club Stakes over 1600 metres on Saturday 16 April 2022.

The theme for this year’s Royal Race Day is “A Touch of Class with the Sport of Kings” and it will take place at Turffontein Racecourse.

With contributions from our regular supporters, we have been able to increase the stake of this premier race to R1,25 million.

Mike Wittstock, the father of HSH Princess Charlene, has from the outset been an enthusiastic supporter of this event and numerous charities as well as schools from disadvantaged backgrounds in the south and east of Johannesburg, have benefitted as a result of his involvement.

An announcement will be made in due course as to which beneficiaries will be selected for the 2022 event.

Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 restrictions, the day will be impacted in terms of on course attendance and international travel by South African Sport of Kings Group based in Monaco.

This group of businessmen have been extremely generous in fund raising and they have enjoyed several visits to South Africa in the past.

Another promotion linked to the involvement of HSH Princess Charlene, has been to encourage a dress code on the day with ladies elegantly dressed with hats or fascinators and gentlemen smartly attired.  This has been in keeping with the race being held on the royal day and exciting prizes will be on offer to patrons who make the added effort and dress appropriately.

The day also sees the running of the Spook Express Stakes (Listed) over 2400m. We are looking forward to an excellent day’s racing with South Africa’s champion fillies and mares as well as entertainment and hospitality. Details of planned promotions on the day will be advertised in due course.
