Former KZN galloper Breakfast Club has adapted quickly to his new Port Elizabeth home base and broke the ice in style with an impressive victory at just his third run in the region in the R110 000 East Cape Poly Challenge at Fairview on Friday.

After Cape Rebel’s good first leg win last month in the R600 000 local all-weather triple crown, Corne Spies and owner Justin Turner were hopeful of setting up a big day in the third leg in May. But that was not to be as their super gallant Cape Rebel had no answer to the sweeping late run of the well-drawn Breakfast Club.
Formerly based with Dennis Drier in KZN, the Nic Jonsson owned gelding looks likely to pay his way with Alan Greeff and may be a horse worth following on the polytrack.
Produced inside the final 250m by Greg Cheyne, Breakfast Club skipped clear and held off the late challenge by a length of the extremely consistent mare Sao Paulo, who became a contender for the R50 000 series bonus after placing third in the first leg.
The winner’s time was 82.74 secs.
Cape Rebel, who already has the edge in the bonus contest as he has won a leg, was always in contention and ran a game third a further half length away, with Dawnbreaker – who looked dangerous late – back in fourth.
The Summerhill Stud-bred Breakfast Club is a 5yo gelded son of Visionaire (Grand Slam) out of the two-time winner L’orange (Rich Man’s Gold).
He has won 5 races with 6 places from 19 starts for stakes of R329 600.
Alan Greeff – four winners on the afternoon
Alan Greeff saddled four winners on the afternoon – Greg Cheyne rode three of them with Teaque Gould picking up one.
Yvette Bremner also enjoyed a profitable day – with her three winners split between Lyle Hewitson (2) and Ryan Munger.
The third and final leg of the East Cape Poly Challenge is the R110 000 WSB East Cape Poly Challenge 1600 which is run over a mile on Friday 11 May.
