With the winter months drawing in, the sun doesn’t get up much before 7:45am, so racing enthusiasts and Durbanville locals alike are invited to their very own ‘secret sunrise’ sessions at grass gallops at Durbanville Racecourse every Thursday morning.

Club gallops take place every Thursday (weather permitting).  Horses board the distinctive red liveried floats of New Turf Carriers at Milnerton and Philippi at around 7am, arriving at Durbanville just before 8, with the first strings making their way onto the track from around 8am.

There is plenty of parking, gallops are open to the public, entry is absolutely free and from Thursday, 6 June 2019, warming tea, coffee and bacon and egg rolls will be available from on course catering (trainers planning to bring clients are encouraged to notify Ralph (074 200 4550) by 4pm on Wednesdays to advise numbers).

Affectionately known as the ‘country course’, Durbanville is one of the prettiest racecourses in the country.  Club gallops make for a great morning’s outing, as well as offering the chance to get up close to the horses and chat to the trainers and jockeys about their runners as well as the weekend’s racing. So why not invite locals – as well as friends and family from further afield – to pop down and discover a hidden Durbanville gem right on our doorstep?

The next gallops are scheduled for Thursday, 6 June 2019.
