The 3yo debut of Justin Snaith’s boom General Franco and the career debut of the Dean Kannemeyer- trained National Yearling Sale big-ticket Track Attack will add plenty of interest to the Durbanville eight race card today.
Coming off a break of 16 weeks after an inexplicably flat run that followed an impressive debut, General Franco gets a chance in the second race to show his mettle.
According to Justin Snaith General Franco has been doing very well at home.
“ I have galloped him, he is ready and should give his full potential,” he told Michael Clower earlier this week.
“If he wins today he is obviously a horse for the future but he will have to prove it here and whether he is mature enough to win against a field like this I’m not sure. It is very hard at this level. Also he has never seen Durbanville although I have galloped him round the turn at Kenilworth.”
Track Attack runs in the final race. The Varsfontein-bred son of Dynasty set a new sales record when purchased by Form Bloodstock for Khaya Stables at the 2018 National Yearling Sale at R5,2 million. While that record was broken just months ago thanks to Shadwell’s R9 million Silvano colt purchase, Track Attack still carries plenty of pressure.
He is a half-brother to four winners, most notably exported Equus Champion Yorker.
He steps out in the final race, a 1400m maiden and this is likely to be on the short side for him – but Kannemeyer suggests he be included in exotics.
Keagan de Melo was injured at Scottsville last Sunday and his mounts are taken by Stuart Randolph, who flies in from Durban for the day.
The false rail is set at 1m on the back straight, 4m on the turn with a 5m spur at approximately the 500m mark.
