Unsafe underfoot conditions

Following the running of the first race at Durbanville Racecourse on Wednesday, the jockeys lodged a protest citing unsafe underfoot conditions as a major concern.

As a result, the remainder of the race meeting was abandoned in the interests of safety.

Some punters expressed concern that the authorities had not applied their minds and that there was little prospect of the meeting continuing, even from earlier in the day.

However, after 67mm of rain fell in the past seven days and a further 6mm fell overnight and in the morning, horses were in fact brought to the track at 08h30 to gallop.

Subsequent to this gallop, the track was declared soft and suitable for racing.

Aldo Domeyer won the first on the fancied and aptly named Ticket To Ride for Greg Ennion.
