Drakenstein Stud’s resident sire Duke Of Marmalade had a royal winner at Newmarket on Friday.
His beautifully bred daughter Daphne (who holds an entry in the Gr1 Investec Oaks) ran on gamely under Pat Cosgrave to win a maiden fillies stakes over 2400m for Her Majesty The Queen. Unlucky last time out, Daphne dug down deep to justify her status as the 9-4 favourite and she looks a progressive sort in the making.
Trained by William Haggas (who has a superb record in the Epsom classics), Daphne (also entered in the Gr2 Ribblesdale Stakes), is out of the Daylami mare Daring Aim.
Duke Of Marmalade, whose 2016 stakes winners include Australian Group winner Diamond Made, looks on track for a potentially very big year.
His champion daughter Simple Verse looks likely to line up in the G1 Investec Coronation Cup on Investec Derby day while another daughter, recent stakes winner Responsibleforlove, is current a leading fancy to win the classic Oaks D’Italia (Italian Oaks).
Duke Of Marmalade is also the sire of talented galloper Can’thelpbelieving, who finished a cracking third in Saturday’s Gr1 Man O’War Stakes. Beaten just under two lengths, Can’thelpbelieving looks to have a real nice prize in him, and this lightly raced gelding looks a horse to follow this year in North America’s turf contests.
Cartier Champion Older Male in 2008, Duke Of Marmalade is currently the sire of 28 stakes winners with his progeny having earned over $19 000 000 –and counting!
