New Hong Kong-based owner has first SA winner

The Mike De Kock stable saddled a first winner for new patron Dr Michael Tang when Dreamuponadream stormed home to win a Maiden Juvenile Plate over 1200m at Clairwood on Wednesday. In his third visit to the racetrack, Tang’s two-year-old gelding by Judpot put three lengths between himself and the runner-up.

“This won’t be this one’s last win,” Mike de Kock said on Wednesday evening of Dreamuponadream, who was twice beaten when backed to favourite during May. “He’s always showed us good work and he’s improved more after being gelded. He’s a smart sort, I think he has a future.”

Mike congratulated his winning owner and said: “Dr Tang is based in Hong Kong, he is in the fashion business. I met him by chance at the Summerhilll Ready To Run Sale in 2013. He picked Dreamuponadream himself and paid R400,000 to secure him. He walked up to me out of the blue and asked if I would train the horse.

“Dr Tang took us to lunch when we were in Hong Kong to saddle Variety Club recently. He’s a big supporter of SA racing and he’s keen on getting more involved. He’s another example of a buyer ready to invest in our industry. The floodgates will open once we get the export protocols sorted out.”

The Inspiring Story Of Dr Marianne Thomson

‘I am writing this as an older, small breeder and in our language, Markus, because this is our war. If I phoned you, I’d be overwhelmed by business jargon within a minute. What makes you so angry that you don’t care what you are doing to our shaky industry? How do you deal with this in your inner, quiet self?’
