Widely respected Veterinarian Dr Jim Antrobus is a proud man as he looks forward to seeing a top-class filly that he bred take her place in the 2018 Sun Met on Saturday.

The Sean Tarry trained Safe Harbour was bred by Jim from Elusive Fort out of the Rakeen mare, Saint Isidore.

But a dark cloud hangs over life for Jim right now. He was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, a few days before Christmas 2017.

Not only did he have to come to terms with the shock and horror of his new reality but this also necessitated a search across the globe for a doctor who would be able to treat him.

It has been a traumatic time for Jim and Merle and the rest of their family.

There is light at the end of the tunnel though, and an oncologist has been found in Sydney, Australia, who has performed over 1000 of the operations that Jim needs. A 14 hour operation, followed by 7 days in intensive care and a further 21 days in hospital is what the Peritonectomy entails.

The costs are enormous and to add to this, the most reputable medical aid in South Africa is appearing not to be acknowledging their payment obligations. Consequently, the costs staring Jim and his family in the face right now amount to R1.6 Million – which needs to be found in 5 days, so that Jim can get on a flight to St Georges Hospital in Sydney and start with this treatment.

The harsh reality is that this is Jim’s only hope.
