Cape jockey Devin Ashby has had his fair share of plain bad luck.
After injuries, and just having come out of a suspension, he now finds himself on the sidelines again after Wednesday’s Hollywoodbets Durbanville meeting.
Riding the first-timer Sooty for his father-in-law Paul Reeves in the opener, Devin sustained hairline fractures in his leg after the fractious gelding sat down in the stalls.
Sooty was scratched and has had his starting stall certificate withdrawn. He is also suspended for 7 days in terms of Rule 61.6.10 and until such time as he proves to be tractable with a companion.
Remarkably, the determined Devin fought through the pain and continued to fulfill another four rides on the day.
His agent Warren Teixeira told the Sporting Post that he had managed to persuade the jockey to rather stand down and get medical attention.
He confirmed that Devin will be out for at least the next 3 racemeetings where he has engagements.
“We will be getting specialist medical advice as to how long the recovery will be. Devin is terribly disappointed and this is understandably a major mental blow for him. He has been working so hard and is focused and determined to do well. But he enjoys a good support structure and he will be back even stronger than before.”
