When trainer Brett Crawford signed the slip for the inaugural R2 million Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes winner Captain America at this sale two years ago, he stepped into a dream still in progress and that climaxed two months ago with an appearance in the Vodacom Durban July.
The Varsfontein Stud bred Captain America is a son of the outstanding Captain Al out of the five-time winning Fort Wood mare Requista, was bought for R500 000.
After placing on debut, he chalked up five wins on the trot, culminating in his impressive victory over the boom colt Red Ray in the R2 million Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes at Kenilworth on 23 November 2013.
He subsequently went on to runner-up positions in both the Gr1 Cape Guineas (behind exported star Elusive Gold) and the Gr1 Investec Cape Derby(behind Horse Of The Year, Legislate), before heading to KZN for Champions Season.
He was placed in both the KRA Guineas and the Daily News behind subsequent July winner Legislate, before finishing 5,70 lengths behind the champion in the Vodacom Durban July.

The Ready To Run Cup stake money is paid all the way down to tenth place and breeder Peter De Beyer would have been particularly pleased that Knysna Lagoon squeaked into the back of the queue to bank the R30 000 cheque. With a partnership of five owners and a R20 000 price tag, she is a winner all the way.
