Locally bred mare outstrips international rivals

An impressive collection of highly pedigreed international broodmares made for what must be the most successful mare sale ever held in South Africa.

Imperious Star is a previous winner of the Gr1 Woolavington.

The inaugural CTS Mare & Fillies For Stud Select Sale was held at Highlands on Friday 10 June.

Imperious Sue – 1998 Gr1 J&B Met

The top priced lot was locally bred Imperious Star – a Gr1 placed Gr1 winner by Navarone (come again?) out of J&B Met winner Imperious Sue.

Consigned by Nutfield Stud, and in foal to Duke Of Marmalade, she sold for R3.2 million to Lammerskraal Stud.

The mare has two previous foals, Gr1 placed (at 2, in 2016) Trippi-colt Double Appeal, and a weanling colt by Duke Of Marmalade.

Second highest price was R3.1 million, given for unraced Irish-bred Galileo mare Cantabella, whose first foal is a Rock Of Gibraltar weanling colt. In foal to Captain Al, this young hopeful will also join the Lammerskraal broodmare band.

In all, nine mares went for a million and more, helping to bring the sale total to R27.9 million for 65 mares sold, with an average of R430k (and R175k median price).

The price list is here.
