Conventional wisdom, especially in the USA, says that sire x broodmare sire combinations are important. Pedigree analysis is done by counting the successes, in terms of black type.
The sire’s sireline and the broodmare sire’s sireline are the key components. Extending the influence beyond that of the actual sire and broodmare sire seems peculiar, but internationally many experts put great store in it.
So it deserves a look.
An analysis for the CTS March yearling sale puts the focus on a variation on such combo’s.
Listed below are all sire x broodmare sire combinations from the catalogue which have produced stakes winners. Shown with it, is the number of runners who carry the combination, the number of those who won, and the stakes winners. Added to this is some background to those stakes winners. All rounded off with a look at the pedigrees of the actual yearlings from the catalogue.
There were less than a dozen yearlings bred on stakes producing combo’s in the 250-strong catalogue, some of which appear to have interesting backgrounds. Judge for yourself.
Dynasty with Al Mufti gives 12r/8w/2sw, including Gr2 De Kock (MR 99) and dual SW Sammy Jo (MR 94).
Al Mufti’s sire line Roberto – Hail to Reason – Turn To gives a strong link to Dynasty’s female line.
Dynasty’s grandam Joy Petite is by Joy out of Lavenda Lady, who both are female line descendants of the mare Lavendula. The latter is the grandam of Turn To.
From Daytona comes #45 a half brother to 4 winners out of Saratoga Shadow, whose best form was in sprints, but who should have stayed 14/1600m. The mare is a full sister to the dam of Bold Silvano. Saratoga Shadow’s dam Saffron is by Enchanter, a son of Joy, who therefore adds still more Lavendula. Saffron and Dynasty’s grandam Joy Petite are close kin, which puts added spin on the yearling colt’s pedigree.
Greys Inn with Rich Man’s Gold gives 2r/1w/1sw, including 2yo SW Forries Waltz (MR 97).
The grandam of Forries Waltz is 5-time winning Kenmare mare Kenmare Belle, whose two grandams are both daughters of Milesian. The latter is a son of My Babu, whose dam Perfume is a daughter of Lavendula.
Greys Inn’s sire line Zabeel – Sir Tristram – Sir Ivor – Sir Gaylord – Turn To gives a link, through Turn To’s grandam Lavendula, while the second dam of Sir Tristram is by My Babu. In Greys Inn’s female we find a daughter of Cagire who is grandson of Lavendula and is a close relative to My Babu. Rich Man’s Gold adds another line of My Babu, from his second damsire Damascus. Altogether a lot of the same.
From Beaumont Stud comes #87 a half brother to 6 winners out of Chilean-bred mare Vecchia Maremma, who won over 1400m as a 3yo (not tried further).
Mambo In Seattle with Captain Al gives 1r/1w/1sw, which is 2yo Gr1 filly Same Jurisdiction (MR 110).
Captain Al is a son of Al Mufti, who is a half brother to the grandam of Mambo In Seattle, both out of the mare Lassie Dear.
The dam of Same Jurisdiction, Diane de Carlo, is out of a mare by National Assembly. The latter’s dam Renounce is by Buckpasser and is close kin to Lassie Dear (also by Buckpasser). Captain Al’s damsire Complete Warrior descends from a half sister to Buckpasser.
From Klawervlei comes #23 a colt, first foal of unraced mare Pulsator, whose Argentine-bred dam Carolain is full sister to Gr1 Natal Oaks winner Carolera. Carolain’s damsire Logical is a son of Buckpasser. The youngster is bred to stay a mile or more.
National Emblem with Captain Al shows 2r/2w/1sw, including Gr1 2yo Potent Power (MR 104).
National Emblem is a son of National Assembly, whose dam Renounce is by Buckpasser and is close kin to Lassie Dear (also by Buckpasser). Lassie Dear is the dam of Captain Al’s sire Al Mufti. Added to that, Captain Al’s damsire Complete Warrior descends from a half sister to Buckpasser.
Potent Power’s dam is unraced Solar Galleon, a half sister to Hard Rock (MR 101, by National Emblem and thus 3-part related to Potent Power).
Solar Galleon’s dam Queen Of Rubies rated 99. Her grandam Calypso Queen is by Jamaico, and very close kin to Captain Al’s grandam Infanta (by Jamaico). To add, National Emblem’s grandam Nun’s Story is close kin to both Calypso Queen’s dam Sea Chant and Infanta’s dam Beylic.
From la Berg comes #159 a colt who is the first foal of unraced mare Dance For Me. The latter’s dam Fleetfoot Dancer is by Dancing Champ, who is close kin to National Assembly’s dam Renounce (the sire of Renounce is Buckpasser, who is very close to Dancing Champ’s dam Mrs Peterkin).
To add, National Emblem’s grandam Nun’s Story is close kin to Dance For Me’s 3rd dam Calorie (by Field Master)
National Emblem with Jallad has 16r/10w/2sw, including the highclass international Gr1 performer Shea Shea (MR 113, TFR 127).
From Klawervlei comes #207 a full brother to a winner, out of 3-time winning miler Harem Dancer. The mare’s dam is full sister to Cape Derby winner Grande Jete (who also is by Jallad).
Sail From Seattle with Al Mufti shows 17r/12w/1sw, including Gr1 Cape Guineas winner Elusive Gold (MR 107), Gr3 placed 2yo Captured Wind (MR 98) and stakes placed 2yo Navistar (MR 91).
The dam of Elusive Gold is half sister to champion Enchanted Garden, from a family with which Al Mufti has done well.
From Favour Stud comes #108 a colt out of stakes placed sprinter (not tried further) Al Marina, who is from the Sister Sublime female line.
Tiger Ridge with Fort Wood registers 20r/15w/4sw, including Gr1 Champion Cherry On The Top (MR 118) and 2yo Gr1 placed Isphan (MR 100).

Var with Fort Wood shows 17r/13w/1sw, including Gr1 placed 3yo Gr1 winner Contador (MR 113) who hails from the Sister Sublime female line. Var’s 3rd dam and Fort Wood’s grandam are close kin.
Rosedene Stud consigns #193 a filly, second foal of her dam Forest Rainbow. The latter raced just three times for 2 places. She comes from the same female line as Fort Wood and is closely inbred, 2×3 to Fort Wood’s dam Fall Aspen. Such mares, even if not well performed, are capable of throwing the bomb. In this case Var’s female line has a double chance to link up.
Var with National Assembly gives 13r/9w/1sw, including Gr2 winner Happy Forever (MR 108). The grandams of Var and National Assembly are close kin. The grandam of Var’s damsire Zilzal makes for an additional kin-link to both.

Western Winter with Fard is still perfect with 2r/2w/1sw, which are 2yo Gr3 winner (and 2x SW) The West Is Wide (MR 104) and full brother No Limits, a winner of 4 races. Their grandam is half sister to the dam of Victory Moon.
