Mayfair Speculators’ Markus Jooste – top buyer
The Inanda Club played host to the inaugural CTS Johannesburg Ready To Run Sale, where 145 lots went through the ring for an aggregate of R24,680,000, an average of R178 841 and a median of R90 000. Heading the buyers list was Mayfair Speculators, paying R7,315,000 for 17 lots, with Dayalan Chinsammy in second position, paying R2,320,000 for 10 lots.
Top vendor was Summerhill Stud with 104 lots selling for R18,260,000, with Kahal (GB) heading the sires list with 22 lots selling for R4, 795,000.

The salestopper was Lot 76, a Var colt out the Kabool (GB) mare Egyptian Reign, a half brother to the Gr.2 Gauteng Fillies Guineas winner Go Indigo. Var retired to stud in South Africa as Champion European Sprinter and as Leading First Season sire in 2008-2009, he has been outstanding, producing two Equus Sprint Champions and a dual Horse of The Year to date. Lot 76 was the only Var on the Sale and with an exceptional gallop, making him one of the judges’ top picks, he was never going to be cheap.
Joey Ramsden set to train ‘best horse on the sale’
Jehan Malherbe’s Form Bloodstock and Mayfair Speculators went head to head, with the hammer finally coming down in the favour of Mayfair Speculators at R1.6 million. “This was the best horse on the Sale and in our opinion, he put up the best gallop as well”, said Derek Brugman, Racing Manager for Mayfair Speculators. The bay colt, who is the spitting image of his sire, will be trained by Joey Ramsden..
As expected Lot 10, Perfumed Lady (SAf), by Captain Al out of the National Assembly mare Scented Samantha started the Sale off with a bang. The filly is a half sister to two multiple Group winners in globetrotting Sweet Sanette and Franny. Bidding started at R200 000 and within minutes it had risen to the R1 million mark before the filly was knocked down to Mayfair Speculators for R1.1 million. “She has immense paddock value and put up a very smart gallop. She will be trained by Mike de Kock”, said Brugman.
Mayfair Speculators also signed for two Visionaire colts, Lot 7 from the family of Champion Three-Year-Old Filly Kiss Of Peace for R340,000 and Lot 61 for R350,000, while Brugman had to go to R550,000 to secure Lot 138, a Visionaire filly from the family of globetrotting Imbongi. Other purchases included Lot 25 a Seventh Rock (AUS) filly for R380,000 and two Kahal(GB) colts, Lot 66 for R425, 000 and Lot 72 for R320,000.
Mike Azzie will train Khetiwe
Prominent owner Adrian van Vuuren entered the fray when he went to R800,000 for Lot 94, Ebony Knight, a Kahal (GB) colt out of the imported Doyoun (GB) mare Haifaa(IRE) from the family of European Older Horse and sire Maroof. The Australian imports were expected to be amongst the big sale lots and a spirited bidding war ensued over Lot 108, the beautiful Redoute’s Choice (AUS) filly out of La Lune(AUS), from the family of Australian superstar Miss Finland, also by Redoute’s Choice.
The filly, named Khetiwe, put up a very impressive gallop and Van Vuuren, who was determined to have her, had to go to R1.2 million before she was finally his.

Following hot on her heels was Lot 110, an Encosta De Lago (AUS) colt out of Legal Engagement (AUS), with the hammer falling at R900 000 to CTS Chairman Chris van Niekerk. Van Niekerk also bought Lot 69, a Kahal (GB) filly from the female family of Meeznah (Dynaformer) for R400,000.
Lot 82, the Exceed and Excel (AUS) filly out of the Success Express mare Flying Celebrity (AUS) sold for R800 000 to Janet Baker Properties, while Mayfair Speculators went to R700,000 for the last of the Australian imports Lot 132. By High Chaparral (IRE) out of the Ustinov mare Prime Choice (NZ), the smart filly hails from the family of international star Helene Vitality (NZ).
Mike De Kock will train for Lars Kelp
2009 Champion Sprinter Rebel King (SAf) has excelled at stud and it came as no surprise that Lot 28, a colt out of the Russian Fox mare Sweet Natasha (SAf) was knocked to Mr Dayalan Chinsammy for R400,000. Chinsammy also snapped up Lot 78, the only Western Winter on the sale for R800,000. Named Stebbins, the blue blooded colt is out of the Rakeen mare Eris (SAf), a daughter of Champion Broodmare Fashing and a half sister to 2004 Equus Horse of the Year, Yard Arm. Danish trainer and owner Lars Kelp, who had travelled a considerable distance to attend the sale, was delighted when he managed to snap up the horse of his choice, Lot 121 for R280,000. The Fort Wood colt will remain in South Africa for the moment, to be trained by Mike de Kock.
