Kenilworth Development plans
A newly formed environmental action group is taking legal action against the proposed development at Kenilworth Racecourse.
The Kenilworth Racecourse Environmental Action Group (KREAG) was established in the wake of the Cape Town City Council’s dismissal of appeals to halt the proposed development of the historic racecourse (see our earlier report here).
The 6.8 ha development, which consists of a mix of hotel, retail and residential components, was rubber-stamped by outgoing Cape Town mayor, Patricia de Lille.
De Lille also dismissed appeals to halt the project, a move which raised strong concerns by local residents and conservationists. KREAG spokesman, Dr David Gwynne-Evans, has accused De Lille of conflicting interests in the project and KREAG has partnered with The Environmental Management Inspectorate (EMI), otherwise known as the Green Scorpions, to lay criminal charges.
KREAG is hosting a meeting to promote public support for placing the Mayoral Approval on Review and all interested parties are invited to attend.
