The Moonee Valley Racing Club have received 135 nominations for the A$5 million Cox Plate, headlined by three-time winner Winx and European star Poet’s Word.
The Longines world’s top-rated racehorse, Winx is bidding for an unprecedented fourth successive Cox Plate victory on 27 October
But Derby winner Latrobe could throw down the gauntlet to Winx after his Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Joseph O’Brien revealed the star colt is among his Cox Plate entries.
Owned by Lloyd and Nick Williams, Latrobe is one of several O’Brien contenders in line for a trip to Australia.
Joseph’s father Aidan could also be represented at Moonee Valley by Hunting Horn and Lucius Tiberius.
According to reports, the pair have been sent to Chicago for the Secretariat Stakes, following the pathway of Adelaide and Highland Reel, who was third to Winx in the champion’s first Cox Plate win in 2015.
