Corinne’s Sunday Strike

Good old-fashioned racing news

Summerveld trainer Corinne Bestel only has a dozen horses in her yard but gave us a happy story to end another tough racing week of mixed news when she scored a double at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Sunday from just two runners.

Accompanied by her longstanding patron and friend Georgina Buchanan, the vastly experienced Corinne led in two winners ridden by Gareth Wright, including the Clifton Stud -bred Soiree who won a cracker on debut.

A R15 000 KZN Yearling Sale graduate, Soiree is a daughter of Capetown Noir out of the six-tie winning Joshua Dancer mare True Lily, who Corinne trained in the same silks.

The Klawervlei lease Blaze Of Silk was the second Bestel winner when the son of Twice Over showed his well-being to score his fourth win from eighteen starts.

Interestingly, Corinne’s first winner was Sheriff`s Star in the same silks at Greyville on 13 August 1994. He was ridden by Jeff Lloyd.

She was assistant to her legendary Mom Eileen Bestel for seven years and worked with some big horses including Speak No Evil, winner of the Mercury Sprint, Swift And Silent who won ten races including the Christmas Handicap, Irish Limerick, winner of the Flamboyant Stakes and Royal Tiara

Corinne trained the very smart Azuaga, who won the Rupert Ellis Brown Memorial. Olympic Flag won both the Byerley Turk and the KwaZulu-Natal Stakes. St Lazare was also a top-class sort and won the Christmas Handicap.
