Classic Day Is Here

Please note the fairly early start at 11h40

An exciting ten-race programme is hosted on Classic Day  at Turffontein Racecourse this afternoon.

We see the running of the Grade 1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic as well as the Grade 1 WSB SA Classic.

There is a R1 million Pick 6 carryover with a likely pool of R6 million.

The first is due off at 11h40.

Both first-leg winners of the Triple Crown and Triple Tiara will be back in action at Turffontein in the R1.5-million WSB SA Classic and R1.25-million Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic respectively.

Both are Grade 1 races over 1800m.

Eye Of The Prophet displayed great courage to hold off Royal Victory in the 1600m first leg and the gelding will have no problem with the extra 200m. That victory gave apprentice Rachel Venniker her first Grade 2 victory and she will be looking to bag her first Grade 1 winner on the three-year-old on Saturday.

The main dangers are Royal Victory, Shoemaker, East Coast, Billy Bowlegs and Electric Gold.

Billy Bowlegs from the Alec Laird stable takes his place in the Gr1 WSB SA Classic.

He is a winner of his last two starts over this distance, the latest of which was in the Grade 3 Sea Cottage Stakes on this course.

He beat Eye Of The Prophet by 0.15 lengths in his penultimate victory and is 3kgs better off at the weights today.

He does have a wide draw to contend with, but he is likely to be switched off near the rear of the field and will be mowing down the frontrunners

Lady Of Power won the 1600m first leg of the Triple Tiara, beating Feather Boa by 0.25 lengths courtesy of an enterprising ride from Piere Strydom. The filly has since changed stables, but Strydom has retained the ride and her new trainer Mike Azzie, who trains in partnership with his son Adam, said: “We do have a wide draw (No 12) to contend with. But the way she strides, I think she’s good enough to win.”

Trainer Sean Tarry saddles Women Of Fame in Race 3. Her debut effort over 1000m on the Vaal Classic course was eye-catching.

She challenged strongly, but was touched off by Ice Star. The daughter of What A Winter found betting support that day which suggests that she was showing good work at home.

She looks to have ability and with the natural improvement that is expected, she should take a power of beating.

The revamped free-to-enter Hollywoodbets Punters’ Challenge was relaunched on Wednesday with new prize payouts formulae. The popular competition is also now available on all local racemeetings, as well as Hong Kong and Singapore!

Besides the R5000 must-be-won prize which is allocated to the top 20 finishers on the leaderboard for every challenge racemeeting, the all-or-nothing 100% clean sheet jackpot prize will now be determined by the number of runners at the race meeting multiplied by R10 000 per unit, for all venues.

For example, there are currently 122 starters on the Turffontein card . At R10 000 per starter, the jackpot prize will be R1 220 000!

And double your potential prize payout by wagering a minimum of R50 on the Betslip that is generated by your Hollywoodbets Punters’ Challenge entry.
