Candice Bass-Robinson and stable jockey Aldo Domeyer made a flying start to the SplashOut Cape Derby day at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday when the Querari filly Rainbow Lorikeet registered her first stakes success in a dawdle and sprint for victory in the R250 000 Schweppes Listed Cape Fillies Classic.
In a typical example of the frustrating ‘Cape Crawl’, the 1800m race turned into a sprint for home with the tote favourite Rainbow Lorikeet (5-2) holding off a determined challenge from UK visitor Daniel Muscutt on Summer Lily (7-2) in a time of 115,44 secs.
The lesser fancied of the Brett Crawford duo, Princess Izzy (10-1) came on late for third.
The winner is out of the Silvano mare Nightingale, who gave trainer Candice Bass-Robinson her maiden Gr1 success in the 2017 Klawervlei Majorca Stakes, when ridden by present day Hollywood Syndicate manager Anthony Delpech.
Her daughter Rainbow Lorikeet is raced by the Yuppie Syndicate and was bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein from the Maine Chance star, Querari (Oasis Dream).
Rainbow Lorikeet has won 3 races with 5 places from her 9 starts for stakes of R347 219.
