Charyn & Kyprios Strengthen Cartier Claims

Latest standings in the premier awards

Charyn continued his exceptional season with a third top-level success in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Sponsored By QIPCO) at Ascot on Saturday, propelling the four-year-old to the head of the points standings for this year’s Cartier Horse of the Year.

Charyn recorded an ultimately comfortable two-length victory in the mile highlight of QIPCO British Champions Day, adding to his wins in the Queen Anne Stakes and Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard Jacques Le Marois.

Nurlan Bizakov’s star has leapfrogged Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triompheheroine Bluestocking (152 points) at the head of both the Cartier Horse of the Year and Cartier Older Horse divisions with 192 points in Pattern races this year.

Trained by Roger Varian, Charyn has raced every month this season apart from July, with his only defeats coming when finishing second in the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes and Prix du Moulin de Longchamp. The son of Dark Angel may not be finished for the year, with a trip to Japan for next month’s Mile Championship under consideration.

Kyprios (168) rattled off a seventh consecutive win this year as he saw off Sweet William (62) and Trawlerman (31) in the QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup, enhancing his own Cartier Horse of the Year prospects in the process.

Recipient of the Cartier Stayer award in 2022, the son of Galileo has looked better than ever on his return from injury this season and is strongly placed to collect the same prize again.

An excellent QIPCO British Champions Day also saw Anmaat (56) post a thrilling victory in the QIPCO Champion Stakes.

The Shadwell-owned six-year-old flew home to prevail by half a length over Calandagan (80), who had chased home Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt leader City Of Troy (144) in the Juddmonte International Stakes on his previous start. Fellow Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt aspirant Economics (80) failed to further his claims as he could only finish sixth on testing ground.

Kalpana (44) rounded off a superb autumn with a dominant success in the QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes. The Juddmonte homebred could yet challenge for the Cartier Three-Year-Old Filly award alongside Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Sponsored By QIPCO) third Tamfana (62), who has also enjoyed a productive end to the season.

Kind Of Blue (54) emulated his relatives Deacon Blues and The Tin Man with a head verdict over Swingalong (48) in the QIPCO British Champions Sprint. Trained by James Fanshawe for Wathnan Racing, the son of Blue Point has enjoyed a meteoric rise during 2024 and currently occupies fifth spot behind Bradsell (80) in a wide-open Cartier Sprinter division.

Godolphin appears to have strong contenders for both juvenile prizes at the Cartier Racing Awards after winning both feature races at Newmarket’s Dubai Future Champions Festival earlier in the month.

Cartier Two-Year-Old Colt hopeful Shadow Of Light (72) became only the second horse in 42 years to complete the Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes/Darley Dewhurst Stakes double as he prevailed in a tactical renewal of Europe’s leading two-year-old race.

Desert Flower (48) stretched her unbeaten record to four with an authoritative victory in the bet365 Fillies’ Mile, a performance that sees her move into a clear second behind Lake Victoria (72) in the Cartier Two-Year-Old Filly standings.
