Champion Sire’s Great Form To Continue

Set for a terrific day on Sunday

Gimmethegreenlight, South Africa’s Champion Sire of 2020-2021, looks set to be crowned Champion once again as the season winds up on Sunday.

The son of More Than Ready, sire of Saturday’s Listed Olympic Duel Stakes first and third place finishers, Kwinta’s Light and Gimme’s Lassie, appears to have a strong hand at Hollywoodbets Greyville on World Pool Gold Cup day.

The champion is set to have runners in no fewer than eight of the ten feature races, and it appears most likely he will come away with at least one stakes victory on the weekend.

He is represented in Sunday’s Gr2 Tabgold Umkhomazi Stakes by sons Ready To Charge and eyecatching Sunday debut winner Tail Of The Comet, and in the Gr2 World Pool With Gold Circle Debutante, by daughter Cala Muretta.

Dual graded stakes winner Cosmic Highway represents his sire in the Listed @worldpool Twitter Handicap. Gimmethegreenlight gelding Money Heist is first reserve for the same race, while his star sons Lucky Lad and Sandringham Summit both contest the Gr1 World Pool Moment Of The Day Champion Stakes on Sunday.

The Gimmethegreenlight sired full-sisters Bless My Stars and Let’s Go Now line up in the Gr2 Riding High Together Gold Bracelet, and Gr1 Douglas Whyte Stakes respectively, and his outstanding son Gimme A Prince looks a huge runner in the Gr1 Mercury Sprint. Second Base represents Gimmethegreenlight in the Gr1 The HKJC Champions Cup.

It has been a wonderful season for Gimmethegreenlight, who currently heads South Africa’s General Sires List, Leading Sires of 2YOs premiership, and Leading Sires of 3YOs log.

At the time of writing, Gimmethegreenlight runners had earned R21 540 800, which places the Varsfontein Stud resident more than R5 million clear of General Sires List runner-up What A Winter.

Prior to Sunday, Gimmethegreenlight had been responsible for a top season of graded stakes winners in 2022-2023, with his tally headed by the Gr1 winners Bless My Stars (Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic), Gimme A Prince (Pongracz Cape Flying Championship, Golden Horse Sprint) and Lucky Lad (Gold Medallion). At the time of writing, Gimmethegreenlight had been responsible for seven Gr1 winners, with his son Got The Greenlight having commenced stud duties at Camargue Stud in 2022.

The depth of Gimmethegreenlight’s runners this season can be seen in the fact he is also responsible for high-class performers Eye Of The Prophet (Gr2 WSB Gauteng Guineas), Sandringham Summit (Gr2 Durban Golden Horseshoe),  and Second Base. The latter went close to providing Gimmethegreenlight with yet another Gr1 win when he finished a short-head second to Puerto Manzano (Seek Again), in the World Sports Betting Premier’s Champions Challenge back in April.

Gimmethegreenlight pulled off yet another notable feat when his offspring Lucky Lad, Amber Rock and Gimmeanotherchance filled the first three spots in the 2023 Gr3 Protea Stakes, to give their sire a rare graded stakes clean sweep, while Gimmethegreenlight is also responsible for promising two-year-olds Gimmeanotherchance, Monumental, and Summer Lily.

Another two-year-old, Tail Of The Comet, made a big impression when romping home to a brilliant debut win on Sunday.

His Olympic Duel Stakes winning daughter Kwinta’s Light has been another stalwart for Gimmethegreenlight, having also prevailed in this season’s Listed Laisserfaire Stakes.
