Casey Tibbs – Hollywoodbets Durban July Influence

Do It Again and Red Saxon carry the flag

Sadler’s Wells’ deceased son Casey Tibbs looks poised to continue his impact on the Durban July this year, being the broodmare sire of Gr1 Hollywoodbets Durban July contenders Do It Again (Twice Over) and Red Saxon (Red Ray).

The former will be bidding to win the July for a third time, having captured the iconic race previously in both 2018 and 2019.

Both Do It Again and Red Saxon were produced by two smart daughters of Casey Tibbs – Do It Again’s dam Sweet Virginia winning six times, including the Gr3 Winter Classic, Gr3 Winter Derby and Gr3 Final Fling Stakes, and Red Saxon’s dam Rodeo Sioux showing high-class form up to 3200 metres.

Among Rodeo Sioux’s more notable efforts was a third place in the Gr2 Gold Bowl of 2014, while she was beaten just a head when runner up in the same year’s Listed Queen Palm Handicap.

Her sire Casey Tibbs is having another productive, albeit posthumous, year as a broodmare sire, with the son of Sadler’s Wells damsire of five black type winners this season, and his daughters producing the winners of more than R3 million in 2021-2022.

These five black type winners include impressive recent Listed Cell C Sharks Gatecrasher Stakes winner Cousin Casey (Vercingetorix). The latter, out of a full-sister to Big City Life, is a runner in Saturday’s Gr2 Durban Golden Horseshoe.

Casey Tibbs is also broodmare sire of classy filly Young Love (Twice Over), winner of Saturday’s Listed World Sports Betting River Jetez Stakes, as well as the Listed WSB Sweet Chestnut Stakes.

Casey Tibbs is no stranger to making his mark in the July -his ill-fated son Big City Life landing the July back in 2009.

Casey Tibbs was also broodmare sire of the first two past the post in the 2018 July where Do It Again beat Made To Conquer (Dynasty). The latter was produced by Casey Tibbs’ G2 The Oaks winning daughter Festive Occasion – whose Gr1 Woolavington 2000 winning daughter Do You Remember ran third in the 2013 Gr1 Vodacom Durban July.

Do You Remember (Silvano) is the dam of the US stakes winner Burning Ambition (Uncle Mo) who ran third in the Gr1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup of 2021.

Casey Tibbs’ legendary sire Sadler’s Wells looks to have a notable impact on the 2022 July field, with the great stallion appearing in the pedigree of no fewer than ten runners in this year’s Hollywoodbets Durban July.

Among the pedigrees in which Sadler’s Wells’ name can be found is that of Kommetdieding, last year’s July winner, as well as Belgarion – winner of the 2020 July.

However, it is not just Casey Tibbs’ male line which has been in the news this year -Casey Tibbs’ full-sister String Quartet is the granddam of 2022 WSB Fillies Guineas winner Under Your Spell (Capetown Noir).
