Vaughan Marshall – not prepared to go to Summerveld
Cape Town trainers are to make a numerically unprecedented assault on the big stakes in Gauteng with some 60 horses expected to race there in the next 12 months.
Mike Bass is already in action at Turffontein and, in addition to the 26-box satellite yard Justin Snaith is starting there next May, Vaughan Marshall intends taking 25 horses from late January for the Highveld season.
He said: “It was a choice of going to Turffontein or taking them to Durban and I was not prepared to go to Summerveld with them.”
Bass added: “I have eight horses at Turffontein ” I sent a few from Durban for the October-November season – and I will have a go at a couple of features. After that I will play it by ear.”
The Milnerton trainer has entered Midnight Run, fourth to Anger in the August Stakes at the Vaal ten days ago, for the R1 million Emerald Cup there on Saturday fortnight.
Phumelela racing boss Patrick Davis said: “Cape Town trainers have come before but there hasn’t been a lot of demand apart from a waiting list for permanent stables for satellite yards. Justin Snaith was on it for four years.
“But there now seems to be a lot more desire to come because of our stakes and perhaps because of some of the policies that have been put in place restricting visitors to Durban.”
