At the top of the list of the five first-season sires represented at the CPYS, with no fewer than 19 yearlings on offer, is Coup De Grace, the only son of US superstar Tapit at stud in South Africa, and a resident of Klawervlei Stud.

A top class sprinter, who ranked among the leaders of his generation, Coup De Grace’s five victories included the Gr2 Amsterdam Stakes and the historic Gr3 Bay Shore Stakes. He also won the Oh Say Stakes and ran a close up third in the Gr1 King’s Bishop Stakes at Saratoga.
John Koster of Klawervlei commented: “Coup De Grace was always going to get some good mares to get him going, but he got lucky too. When Captain Al started becoming infertile, we swung some of the old champion’s mares the way of our new stallion, so he’s covered some star mares and we’re pleased with what he has produced.
“Coup De Grace has thrown high class yearlings with lots of quality, they are very athletic and correct with huge quarters, and he has stamped them. Many are beautiful chestnut horses with white marks in the face, which comes from his Storm Cat female line.
“The reason why we got so many approved for the sale is that they are forward horses, precocious and should show quick returns, but they do have the length of body to train on into milers,” said Koster.
Among several Koster holds in high regard, he mentioned Lot 31, an unnamed Coup De Grace filly from a half-sister to star three-year-old One World. “She’s a ‘bomb’,” he assessed.
He is also excited about Lot 29, an unnamed filly from Consensual and hence a half-sister to former champion three-year-old filly Just Sensual.
“Al the Coup De Grace foals are beautiful, come and see them at the sale,” said Koster and added: “Duncan Barry at Riverton also has a smart colt, he is from the mare Serious Side, a half-brother to Captain Of All, that should tell you enough!”
