Cape Mare & Weanling Sale Today

Hawwaam & Vercingetorix are covering sires

Silvano has three well-bred daughters on this week’s Cape Mare And Weanling Sale, set to take place at Kenilworth racecourse today.

Silvano’s champion sons Hawwaam and Vercingetorix both also feature as covering sires at the Cape Mare Sale.

And not for a first time, the now deceased former SA Champion sire Silvano stole the show on a South African feature race day – but this time it was as a broodmare sire that he shone.

Chollima wins the Listed East Cape Derby (Pic – Pauline Herman)

Silvano mares produced a hatrick of winners at Fairview racecourse on Friday, with Ekoria (Futura) victorious in Friday’s sixth race, the Listed WSB Dahlia Plate, Chollima (Pathfork) landing the seventh race, the Listed WSB East Cape Derby, and Basetsana (Ideal World) winning the eighth race on the Fairview card.

Silvano is also broodmare sire of smart three-year-old Homely Girl (Querari), who finished second in Sunday’s Listed Syringa Handicap.

Silvano daughters also fared well on the racetrack the following day where Princess Anastasia and Silver Maria ran second and third respectively in Saturday’s Listed KRA East Coast Cup.

Ekoria is out of the Silvano daughter Equina, a former star in Zimbabwe who won the 2014 Castle Tankard among others, Chollima is out of the unraced Silvano mare Chillon, and Basetsana (bred on the same Ideal World/Silvano cross as Listed The Scarlet Lady winner Louisiana) is out of the winning Silvano mare Vera.

Promising two-year-old Ekoria sports a particuarly interesting pedigree. Not only does her highly promsing sire Futura (Dynasty) sport the Plum Bold mare Bold Vixen as a fourth dam, the aforementioned Bold Vixen also ranks as the third dam of Ekoria’s high-class dam Equina.

Chollima’s dam Chillon hails from an outstanding international family, while Chillon’s speedy half-sister Champery (Querari) dam of this season’s Gr1 WSB Cape Fillies Guineas winner Chansonette (the latter being sired by Silvano’s outstanding son Vercingetorix). Chillon’s dam Celigny is a half-sister to Gr1 Las Virgenes winner Eden’s Moon (Malibu Moon), and this is the immediate family of US champion and top-class sire Theatrical (Nureyev) among many others.

Lot 13-a 1/2 sister to PE Gold Cup winner Plano, she sells in foal to The United States -resulting foal is set to be bred on the same cross as speedy Gr2 winner Sheela

Vera, dam of Friday winner Basetsana, is another Silvano mare to hail from an outstanding female line. Her dam Vain Affair (Vain) was a sister to Gr1 winner Festal and half-sister to La Bamba -the dam of Gr1 Hong Kong Sprint winner Inspiration (Flying Spur) and Gr1 Australian Guineas winner Wandjina (Snitzel). (La Bamba also ranks the granddam of former high-class South African raced two-year-old Banaadeer, who ran second, to champion Carry On Alice (Captain Al), in the 2014 G1 SA Nursery.)

This past weekend, however, is not the first time that Silvano sired broodmares have made their mark.

Silvano already ranks as the damsire of such notable graded stakes winners as Goodtime Gal (Gr3 Victress Stakes, Gr3 Diana Stakes), Wonderwall (Gr2 Joburg Spring Challenge), Cosmic Light (Gr2 The Debutante), Barahin (Gr2 Golden Horseshoe, Gr2 Charity Mile, Gr3 Jubilee Handicap), and this season’s top-class three-year-old Cosmic Highway (both Barahin and Cosmic Highway being sired by Gimmethegreenlight while Wonderwall and Cosmic Light were both sired by Querari- Cosmic Highway and Cosmic Light are both out of Silvano mare Cosmic Dream).

With a number of top-class daughters yet to be represented on the racetrack, Silvano’s broodmare influence looks set to grow in the coming years.
