Cape trainers were not able to fill a meeting carded for Kenilworth on Wednesday 22 January and the Eastern Cape has again come to the rescue, taking the meeting over at short notice.
The Cape racing population has reduced dramatically over the past year for a variety of reasons but it is puzzling that the local trainers and the programmers are seemingly not putting their heads together to find a solution. Or is the programme not the issue?
Beyond the recent high profile feature meetings, the subscription to the Cape meetings has been generally poor.
Tuesday’s eight race meeting boasted just 55 runners, while only 80 are carded for this Saturday’s eight race Kenilworth card.
The lost meeting included eight events, amongst them an MR 86 Handicap, a R90 000 Progress Plate and four maiden races.
