The Cape Summer Season will reach a fitting climax on 22 February at Kenilworth when a reshuffled feature day sees the sun setting on a terrific three months of entertaining racing down South.
The reshuffle heralds another ‘mega day’ of racing just three weeks after the Sun Met.
There has been plenty of debate as to the wisdom of running the colts’ and fillies nurseries so early in the season.
Moving the two races earlier in the year was apparently done in the hope of attracting bigger fields , as well as creating an additional opportunity for youngsters who did not win the Juvenile Stakes on Met Day.
But as it stands at close of first entries this morning, only thirteen entries were received for the Kenilworth Fillies Nursery. And due to insufficient entries, the Gr3 Cape Of Good Hope Nursery has been reopened and closes Tuesday 11 February at 11h00, with current entries standing.
That seems to be an endorsement by trainers that the reprogramming hasn’t yet had the desired effect.
The Cape Derby was moved off Sun Met day, supposedly allowing the top 3yo’s to run in both the Met and the classic.
This has also not been borne out by the quality fifteen strong entry received.
