The 2021 BSA National Yearling Sale completed the first session on a positive note on Thursday with the Hong Kong Jockey Club going all the way to R2,4 million for the topseller, a Maine Chance-bred Silvano colt.
In an encouraging show of confidence and value, the HKJC bought 3 of the top 5 lots on the first day.
A half- brother to Adam Marcus’ top-class SA Champions Season prospect Princess Calla, the top selling colt from the family of Princess Victoria and Princess Royal, was one of the physical standouts on a high quality catalogue.
Local bloodstock consultant Justine Vermaak of Vermaak Equine acted as as agent.
The regally bred Power Factor (Lot 191), whose sire is just one shy of 100 stakes winners, is out of the Captain Al sired Gr2 Sceptre Stakes/Listed East Cape Fillies Nursery winner Princess Royal – whose daughter Princess Calla captured both the Gr2 Western Cape Fillies Championship and Gr3 Umzimkhulu Stakes this season.
The blue blooded Princess Royal, who hails from the same family as former champion South African sire Jallad, is a three-parts sister to dual Equus Champion, and four time Gr1 winner, Princess Victoria.
Five times South African champion sire Silvano also provided Thursday’s top priced filly, when his daughter October Fair (Lot 133) was knocked down to Pieter Graaff’s Lammerskraal Stud for R1 100 000.
The filly was consigned to the sale by Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm.
A half-sister to Gr1 Golden Horse Medallion winner and Equus Champion Tempting Fate, October Fair – whose talented half-sister Spring Break is also owned by Lammerskraal – is out of Gr3 Tommy Hotspur Handicap victress Miss October – a full-sister to Gr1 Mercury Sprint victor August Rush.
Thursday’s session achieved an aggregate of R47, 225 million -with the average price settling at R262 361 and a median of R200 000.
The second and final day of trading at this year’s National Yearling Sale will commence on Friday morning at 10h00.
