Leading Bloodstock man and South Africa’s top stallion manager, John Freeman continues to be inspired by the extraordinary resilience of racing and breeding people.

“Most racing folk are in business and see the bigger picture. They don’t stop what they love doing because of the economy, the global pandemic or the uncertainty of what’s happening in the industry. Yes, things are tougher than ever, but they factor it all in. This is our passion and we will be at the sale – masked up and social distancing. Thankfully, most of what happens is outside and when we are indoors, we have a small team and we are in our bubble,” he tells the Sporting Post.
And as for tough times, he looks back at how he syndicated a top 3yo for stud in Erik The Red in 24 hours in December – at the height of the pandemic.
“Breeders come to the table with their eyes open. They know they are looking at possibly a five year return. But the positivity and passion is there and we soldier on. We are all heavily invested and I personally am going nowhere else at my age!”
John has been attending the National 2yo Sale for longer than most, and says that there is always value.
“There is inevitably money at the top end. The bottom end is what it is. The gems will be there. One can find a late maturing sort – think back to Jackson. He went for a million at this sale. And we know what he did on the track!”
The 2021 renewal of the Bloodstock SA National 2yo Sale which will be held at the TBA Sales complex in Germiston on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 August.
