The Kingmambo stallion Ashaawes is proving a real value for money producer. His daughter Scented Ash showed her mettle by winning Friday’s R75 000 Breeders Guineas Plate run over 1400m at Arlington in great style.
Ashaawes, who stands at James Armitage’s Sandown Stud for a R12 000 fee, was no cheapie himself.
He was bought for US $2.85 million as a yearling and won three of his four starts before injury put paid to the dreams.
Ashaawes was held in high regard by his connections, and was ranked by Godolphin in their ‘Super Six’ to follow before having to be retired prematurely. He was rated 106 by Timeform at three.
Hedley McGrath and Yvette Bremner have a lovely filly on their hands in his daughter Scented Ash, who cost just R50 000 at sale and made a few rand short of that when winning the PE Friday afternoon topliner.
Fourteen 3yo fillies went to post for a non black type feature race that somehow always had ‘surprise’ written all over it.
The eventual favourite Tudor Star jumped keenly from her rails position but was quickly overtaken by Olympic Victory who was hussled around from her wide draw to lead at a solid gallop, with Dreamwalker relaxed in third.
Turning into short home run, Olympic Victory started feeling the pressure as Tudor Star came forward with Scented Ash also looking dangerous.
In an all Mauritius jockey show, Karis Teetan and Nooresh Juglall bumped heads as Scented Ash and Tudor Star came together in the final 300m to fight it out.
The daughter of Ashaawes finished the stronger to get the upper hand and win by a head at a price of 8 to 1. Her winning time was 84,39 secs.
Tudor Star was not disgraced in second, and the third horse, Ilha Da Rock, was all of 5, 60 lengths back.
Justin Snaith’s Valor Red ran a fair race in fourth after ruining her prospects by bolting before the start.
Scented Ash was bred by Cheveley Stud and is by Ashaawes out of the unraced Jallad mare, Self Scented.
A winner of 2 of 12 starts for 4 places, she looks a real fighting sort who could still improve further to win her races.
Scented Ash is a R50 000 National Yearling Sale graduate and took her earnings to R 97 375 with this win.
