After the Christmas Day break, local racing returns today with the running of the R250 000 Listed Christmas Handicap heading a tricky looking nine-race programme on the Greyville turf track.
The 1600m Christmas Handicap has attracted a field of 14 runners with the classy five-time winner Redcarpet Captain maintaining his good form out of his new stable. He takes on the 2016 Graham Beck Stakes winner Doosra and the handily weighted Duncan Howells runner Legend, who won such a good race over the course and distance last time.
Doosra will now be ridden by Gunter Wrogemann as Gavin Lerena, who had a nice card of rides, is indisposed.
The Christmas Handicap is the fourth leg of an estimated R2,1 million Pick 6 which commences in race 4 at 14h20. This is a tricky fillies and mares MR 62 Handicap where Riverboat Queen and Go With Flo could be best. With fourteen horses running and not wanting to be blown out in the first leg, it may pay to go with the field. But it doesn’t get much easier after that!
The first race is off at 12h35.
There is a 16% chance of light rain and the pen reading is recorded as 21.
