Watch your back, Jackson! Dennis Drier’s talented four year old Dynasty filly Beach Beauty kicked sand in the face of some males with serious aspirations, when winning the Gr2 Betting World 1900 in dazzling style tonight at Greyville. She now looks well on track to carrying the flag together with Europa Point, for the fairer sex in the Vodacom Durban July.
We all know what she did last summer. The rollercoaster ride of her 2011/12 Cape Sizzling Summer Season is now surely well behind this terrific pint-sized filly with a heart the size of Blaauwberg Beach. The excuses and the blame. Two narrow Group race second places and an unlucky close-up fifth to Igugu in the J&B Met. The focus is now on the future and the Gr1 Vodacom Durban July.
Beach Beauty went off a 15-4 tote favourite against fourteen quite diverse male opponents, that included the likes of Drill Hall Stakes runner-up Chesalon and serious July candidates in Polar Bound and Top Seller.
Jockey Sean Cormack did not panic when he found himself in no-man’s land out in front shortly after the start, with his colleagues seemingly reluctant to take up the initiative and lead. Brandon Lerena came to his rescue as he took the Ramsden runner Lion In Winter around his field to poach a huge lead. Muzi Yeni also gave Beach Beauty, who had now settled well, some cover as he took Master Plan up to lead the following pack.
Turning for home Lion In Winter had 12 lengths on his field, but was starting to stagger as Master Plan and Beach Beauty tackled him in a cavalry charge to the line. The 1900m race had been played out in two chapters. A 1500m grass gallop and a 400m sprint to the line, and Beach Beauty outsprinted the boys in a dash to the line.
Beach Beauty won in a time of 116,14secs and beat Greg Ennion’s Master Plan, who emerged with most credit of the 3yo brigade, by 1,50 lengths. Chesalon and Solo Traveller did their July prospects no harm and both finished well to be two short heads behind in third and fourth positions.
The disappointments at a crucial stage of the season, while not finishing too far back, include the likes of Gold Onyx, Top Seller and Polar Bound, who did not fire at all.
Cormack said afterwards that Beach Beauty was a small but very talented filly, who had a good turn of foot and would ordinarily prefer a true-run race. He confirmed that she would be a big July runner and expressed hopes of a good draw.
Bred by T. Armitage, Beach Beauty is by top stallion Dynasty out of the three-time winning Capture Him mare, Sun Coast, who only won up to 1400m.
Beach Beauty has a career win strike-rate of fifty percent, with her seven wins from fourteen outings. That makes for impressive reading if one considers that nine of her starts have been in Group race company. That is further enhanced by the reality that she has run four Group race seconds. She has earned R1 121 828.
