Barker Says Consistency Is Key

Preparing for the new season

Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker is determined to build on his team’s recent success as they prepare for the new season.

After an impressive third-place finish in the Betway Premiership, securing a spot in Caf Confederation competition, and clinching the Carling Knockout title, Barker is focusing on consistency and further silverware.

Having led the team to a resounding 5-0 victory over Nsingizini Hotspur, the 56-year-old coach emphasised the importance of defending the title (Carling Knockout). He also highlighted the goal of reaching the group stages of the continental tournament and aiming for more domestic trophies in the coming season.

“Our goal is to be consistent, we’ve finished in our last three seasons fourth, six, and third, so consistency is big for us,” Barker said.

“Consistency will mean to keep challenging at the right end of the table (league) one number. We would like to again hopefully go deep into our cup competition and give ourselves a chance to defend that cup (Carling Knockout).

“And maybe get into a final of another cup. We would like to make it to the group stages of the continental competition (Caf Confederation). So, those are the basic three main objectives.”

The Wine Lands will face Mamelodi Sundowns in a two-leg tie of the MTN8 semi-final clash.

The first leg will take place on Wednesday at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium at 19h00, the return leg will be on Sunday at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
