Banker Ultra Magnus In Bipot Opener Today

Blinkers can sharpen the talented sprinter

The WSB Gold Cup day meeting has finally arrived.

The ten-race programme consists of only feature races which includes four Gr1’s.

The first race starts at 11h40.

Jimmy The Rich writes that trainer Brett Crawford sends out Ultra Magnus in Race 2, the first leg of the projected R500 000 Bipot on the day. The Listed Umngeni Handicap is run in honour of the late Terrance Millard, the greatest Gold Cup trainer of all time.

Ultra Magnus looks to be the best bet on the day.

Ultra Magnus – should go very close (Pic – Candiese Lenferna)

He ran an absolute cracker in the Gr1 Golden Horse Sprint when finishing just a short head behind Warrior’s Rest.

The son of Oratorio takes a big drop in class today and it is encouraging that Anton Marcus steps back into the saddle.

He should have no issues with the polytrack today as he has won on the surface in the past. He gets the blinkers fitted for the first time and if the headgear has the desired effect, he should find himself in the winner’s enclosure.

Cat Daddy in Race 1 looks to be the best value on the day. The Glen Kotzen trained son of Ideal World ran a good race in the Campanajo 2200 despite getting carried outwards from the 300m mark to the 100m mark.

He finished 1.7 lengths behind Nexus in the Cup Trial in his penultimate run and is 4kgs better off at the weights.

That should be enough for the tables to be turned. He won on Gold Cup day last year and can get back to winning ways today.

The false rail is a 2,5m spur.

There is a 25% chance of light rain.

  • The Bipot starts in the second at 12h15
  • The Place Accumulator starts in the third at 12h50
  • The Pick 6 starts in the fourth at 13h25
  • Jackpot 1 starts in the fifth race at 14h00
  • Jackpot 2 starts in the seventh race at 15h15
