‘Baby I’m Back!’ – Delighted Derreck

It's been too long!

In an emotional return to the winner’s enclosure at Turffontein on Thursday, former SA Champion Apprentice Derreck ‘DD’ David exclaimed ‘Baby, I’m back’ after riding a powerful finish to get the 20-1 Fromheretoeternity home for the Paul Peter yard in the fifth race of the afternoon.

The thrills of being back in the number 1 box are understandable – the Mauritius Hall Of Famer had not ridden a winner since 7 November 2020 when he booted home former SA-based galloper Huyssteen at the Champ de Mars.

When the Mauritian authorities decreed that ‘foreign’ jockeys must take a two year break and are only permitted to ride for three consecutive seasons, Derreck opted to take a covid-stricken 2021 off and focus on his family.

He returned to his homeland in time to ride on Classic Day earlier this month.

With two seconds, he finally broke the ice at his 18th ride  on Fromheretoeternity on Thursday.

A powerful and internationally experienced jock who goes to scale at 50kgs, the opportunities must surely now be there for the Tyre Buddy-sponsored rider.

“It’s been tough as there are jocks from all over the country here in Gauteng. But I’m glad to be back in the winner’s enclosure after almost eighteen months. Thanks to the Peter yard for the support – and to my wife Angelique andmy  daughter Mila , for their support. Baby, I’m back!” he roared in elation.
