Avontuur’s hugely successful stallion Var has enjoyed a purple patch with his offspring winning all over the country during the past few days.
Since Saturday, Var has been represented by no fewer than seven individual winners, with a number of his offspring looking like horses likely to go on to bigger and better things as the season progresses.
The lightning fast son of Forest Wildcat had a pair of winners on Saturday (Varumba and Kingoftheworld), had another smart looking winner at Scottsville the next day in the form of Timeous, and has since followed up with another four winners this week thus far.
Third in both the G2 SA Fillies Nursery and G3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery last season, the Avontuur bred filly Varumba is being aimed at both the G1 Cape Fillies Guineas and the inaugural CTS$1 million dollar race. She is one of a number of promising sophomores to represent Var this season, with others including the stakes winning males Isca (Listed Storm Bird Stakes), Juan Two Three (Listed Dahlia Plate), and Tar Heel (Listed Somerset 1200).
Var’s son Var Bay made it three wins from his last four outings when bolting up to win at the Vaal on Tuesday, while Var Bay’s paternal half sister Regal Rose landed the Lucky Last on Tuesday when scoring over 1200m.
The former sprint champion also had a smart looking debut winner when his one eyed daughter Hanabi saluted at Durbanville on Wednesday for trainer Eric Sands. In fact the first two races at Durbanville were both won by Var daughters, with the beautifully bred Miss Marker landing the spoils in race two.
Var’s great run of success has propelled the popular stallion into ninth place on the General Sires Log, a position he should improve on further as the season progresses.
Sire of champions Variety Club (now standing his first season at stud), Val De Ra and Via Africa, Var has more than 60 black type performers to his credit, including 16 Grade 1 horses.
