Racing And Culture Collide

Runs daily until 13 February

The synergy between horses and art dates back thousands of years, and the marriage remains as relevant today as it has ever been.

That was the underlying theme of an enthusiastically patronized official opening of Art & Equus at the landmark Avontuur Estate outside Somerset West on Thursday evening.

Participating artists in the exhibition that runs daily to 13 February, include Riaan Van Zyl, Tarryn Stebbing and Robin Kutinyu, while the internationally acclaimed racing photographer Liesl King, Equus Champion photographer Candiese Lenferna and local lensman Chase Liebenberg are showcasing their wares in what is a feast for the eyes, heart and soul.

In a speech welcoming the over one hundred invited guests on the opening night, Avontuur General Manager Pippa Mickleburgh thanked everybody for taking time out on a day when temperatures soared into the 30’s.

“Our generous sponsors Equi-Feeds, the Equine Group and New Turf Carriers and these wonderfully talented artists also warrant a huge word of appreciation and thanks for participating with such enthusiasm. We really do have extraordinary talent in South Africa both on the racetrack and in the art studio. And our international standards are vividly illustrated by the amazing work on display here this evening,” she said.

Many guests stayed to enjoy a sumptious dinner on the verandah of the award-winning Avontuur Restaurant on a perfect evening.

The Art & Equus Exhibition will be a popular port of call during the Cape’s Sizzling Summer Season, with the highlight calendar drawcards of the WSB Cape Town Met on 29 January and the CTS Cape Premier Yearling Sale on 6 February, likely to attract local and international visitors.

Avontuur is open daily for wine tasting and a delicious meal, or even consider spoiling yourself with an overnight stay at the Avontuur Manor House.

The ‘Art & Equus Exhibition’ will be open daily to 13 February 2022.
