And Then There Were 31! Snaith Bolsters Met Arsenal

Countdown to 27 January

There are 31 entrants left in the race for one of 20 berths in the 162nd renewal of the R2 million WSB Gr1 Cape Town Met to be run at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday 27 January.

That’s the picture after the final opportunity for supplementary entries to get a run in the 2000m Cape flagship closed at 11h00 on Monday 8 January.

With all of Puerto Manzano, Cape Eagle, Royal Victory and second stage entry Red Palace now scratched, Justin Snaith’s impressive Anthonij Rupert Wine Gr2 Premier Trophy winner Mucho Dinero was the only supplementary entry, to bring the Met entry class of 2024 to 31.

Something of a revelation after starting the season as an 84 rated two-time winner, Justin Snaith’s Mucho Dinero beat ten WSB Cape Town Met entries to make it four wins on the trot on Saturday.

The son of Twice Over’s official rating has gone up to 110, and he boosts the Snaith entry to eight, as the champion team bid to win the big race for the third time in seven years after Oh Susanna in 2017 and Jet Dark last year.

His trainer did label him a 2024 Hollywoodbets Durban July prospect, so this is an interesting move in a race where the stable is well represented.

Saturday’s sensational L’Ormarins King’s Plate winner Charles Dickens holds an entry in the Met and the Gr1 Cape Flying Championship over 1000m on the same afternoon.

He is clearly a more ominous force than he was when easily beaten in the WSB Green Point Stakes at his previous start, and now presents a poser for his connections.

Declarations are due on Wednesday 17 January, and the final field and draws will be announced the same day.

The final field is at the discretion of the NHA handicappers, in consultation with Cape Racing.

The 2024 renewal’s fashion theme is ‘Cape Splendour’ which embraces a glorious return to form, celebrating the evolution of horseracing at one of Cape Town’s most iconic sporting landmarks.
