Allegretta In The Headlines

Also enjoys plenty of representation in SA

Just weeks after her maternal great great grandson Torquator Tasso (Adlerflug) captured the Gr1 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, legendary broodmare Allegretta was once again in the headlines at QIPCO Champions Day on Saturday.

The dam of Arc winner, and star producer Urban Sea, and 2000 Guineas winner and champion sire King’s Best, made her mark at Ascot on Saturday through both Urban Sea’s star sons Sea The Stars and Galileo, as well as through her granddaughter Al Ishq.

Allegretta occurs in the pedigrees of Saturday’s Gr2 Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup runner up and third place finishers Tashkhan and Stradivarius –with the pair sired by Allegretta’s grandsons, and half-brothers, Born To Sea and Sea The Stars respectively.

The once beaten Sea The Stars has had a great year in 2021, and the former Arc winning champion has come up with yet another star in the form of star three-year-old Baaeed.

The latter made it six wins from six starts when running out a courageous winner of Saturday’s Gr1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (sponsored by Qipco), while accounting for five time Gr1 winner Palace Pier (Kingman) by a neck.

Allegretta appears in the pedigree of both Baaeed and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes third Lady Bowthorpe (Nathaniel), with the latter sired by a son of Sea The Stars’ mighty half-brother Galileo.

The latter also ranks as the sire of Galiway – whose son Sealiway stormed home to land Saturday’s Gr1 Qipco Champion Stakes by three-parts of a length.

Either one of Galileo’s sire sons  or Sea The Stars rate as the sire of four of the nine runners in the Champion Stakes, with third home Mac Swiney closely inbred to Galileo.

Remarkably, Allegretta (Lombard) also features as the fifth dam of promising Irish two-year-old Glounthaune (Kodiac). The latter made it two wins from just three starts when victorious in Saturday’s Gr3 Richmond Homes Killavullan Stakes to give his tremendous female line yet another boost.

Glounthaune’s third dam Al Ishq (a granddaughter of Allegretta) also features as the granddam of Eshaada (Muhaarar).

The latter picked up her biggest win thus far when accounting for a top-class field, headed by 16 length Gr1 Cazoo Oaks winner Snowfall (Deep Impact), to win Saturday’s Gr1 Qipco British Champions Fillies &  Mares Stakes.

The first six home in the Qipco British Champions Fillies& Mares Stakes all carry Allegretta in their pedigrees, while last home in that race, and Cazoo Oaks runner up, Mystery Angel’s granddam was sired by Allegretta’s son King’s Best.

Allegretta has plenty of representation in South Africa – through not only Sea The Stars (sire of Quasillo) and Galileo (whose current active sire sons at stud in this country include Flying The Flag, Global View, and The United States), but through her granddaughter Modraj (Machiavellian).

The latter is dam of the smart galloper Just Cruised In (Just As Well) – winner of four races, including the 2018 Gr3 Caradoc Gold Cup.

Allegretta’s grandson Proclamation also ranks as broodmare sire of last season’s Gr1 Cape Racing Presents The Cape Guineas winner, Russian Rock (Pomodoro).
