All The Fun Of The Fair

More Magic

Turffontein 14th November: The Gr2 Victory Moon Stakes topped the bill on the old stand side track on Saturday and in what proved to be the fastest of the four 1800m races victory here went to the Sporting Post’s best handicapped runner DEO JUVENTE. Freely available at 6/1 on the off, Geoff Woodruff’s charge was swiftly guided over from a wide draw by Callan Murray (3 winners on the afternoon) and raced handy. He was ridden to lead as they approached the 400m marker and kept on strongly in the closing stages of the race to beat the running on EASY LOVER by two.
The supporting act was the 1000m listed Gardenia Handicap and here the Dominic Zaki trained LITTLE GENIE extended her winning sequence to five. As per usual quick into stride, the magical daughter of Judpot was soon at the head of affairs. She kept up a healthy gallop throughout and in a classic finish she held on by the narrowest of margins from the always handy 7/10 favourite CARRY ON ALICE.
The faster of the two 1160m races was the MR73 Handicap in which CLOSE RELATIVE scored an eye catching victory. Nibbled at on course into 13/2 from 8’s, Geoff Woodruff’s charge sat in the backend of midfield for most of the journey. She quickened well going through halfway and won going away after striking the front 150m from home.
Surprisingly the faster of the two 1400m races was the MR79 Handicap won by the friendless GAISCE GOLD. Freely available at 40/1 on the off, Roy Magner’s charge was taken straight to the front by Callan Murray and led throughout. He kept on strongly at the business end of the race and held on by a neck from the always second positioned KING AND EMPIRE.
Titbits
The heavily supported newcomer CHEPARDO (12/1 into 17/10) ran on well from midfield when winning the maiden plate over 1160m going away.
The pacemaker DIESEL JET quickened nicely over the final 400m and won the MR94 Handicap over 1800m going away by five and a half.

Announcing His Arrival

Kenilworth 14th November: Meanwhile on the old course in Cape Town the Gr2 Merchants was the topliner and in what proved to be the fastest of the three 1200m races the lightly weighted TRIPTIQUE landed the spoils. Now a winner of four from nine, Dennis Drier’s charge (16/1 into 9/1) raced in midfield during the early part of the race. He quickened well from halfway and under a well-judged ride from Sean Veale he got up late to deny the easy to back 6yo TEVEZ.
The faster of the two 1000m races was a conditions plate and here a major upset was to be had when JO’S BOND past the post first. Allowed to ease right out to 18/1 from 12’s at the track, the daughter of Captain Al made all. She was always in command and won without any anxious moments by two and a quarter. Jo’s Bond has now won 5 of her 8 career starts.
The boy’s affair was the faster of the two maiden plates over 1400m and victorious here was another easy to back runner in CAVALINO. On leaving the stalls it was ALL MAGIC who elected to make the running whilst Mike Bass’s charge raced close up in third. He was ridden to lead as they approached the 200m pole and won comfortably by a half from SPEED LIMIT (raced second).
Also worthy of note on this card was the performance of the recent maiden winner BLACK ARTHUR in winning the MR85 Handicap over 1600m. Sent off a well-supported favourite at 14/10, Justin Snaith’s charge was always handy. He put his head in front 100m out and beat the original second favourite MAMBO MIME (7/2 out to 7/1) fair and square by a half.
Titbits
Making her 21st racecourse appearance here, the 5yo RISING SUNSET came from the rear when getting off the mark in the maiden plate over 1400m.

Evergreen

Greyville 15th November: Due to soft underfoot conditions races 4,5,6,7 & 8 were switched from the turf to the poly. This meant that race 4 was changed from 2400m to 2000m.
Four of the eight races were staged over 1400m and quickest home amongst these was ALZERRA when registering her third career victory in the MR73 Handicap. Nicely positioned in fifth as the nine runners turned for home, Dean Kannemeyer’s charge ran on best of all and got up late to deny the well-supported 17/10 favourite LOBELIA.
The evergreen stable of Dean Kannemeyer were also on the mark in the opening maiden plate over 1600m when BLACK AGATE dead-heated. Sent off a clear favourite at 12/10, the son of Kahal was soon up handy. He was ridden to lead 200m out and just had enough in hand to draw with the running on DELIRIOUS NOMAD (came from midfield).
The faster of the two 1000m handicaps was the MR78 affair won by the 5yo ARABIAN NATIONAL. Backed into favouritism at the track (4/1 into 3/1), Sean Tarry’s charge led a strung out field throughout. He kept on determinedly at the business end of the race and won without any anxious moments by two and three quarters.
Titbits
The Frank Robinson trained SECOND LIEUTENANT ran on well from midfield when getting up late to win the MR76 Handicap over 1400m.

The Inspiring Story Of Dr Marianne Thomson

‘I am writing this as an older, small breeder and in our language, Markus, because this is our war. If I phoned you, I’d be overwhelmed by business jargon within a minute. What makes you so angry that you don’t care what you are doing to our shaky industry? How do you deal with this in your inner, quiet self?’
