All Eyes Now On August 2yo Sale

BSA KZN Yearling Sale 2024 - A winner

While all eyes are now on the August 2yo Sale on 22 and 23 August, the Thursday 4 July BSA KZN Yearling Sale was another upbeat event on the SA Horseracing’s journey back towards a happy place in a year that has provided much relief and joy for the local industry as it grapples its way forward.

Lot 72 – Lovecomesknocking (f) by Gimmethegreenlight ex Eros’s Girl – sold for R1,9 million (Pic – Candiese Lenferna)

Held in wonderful weather behind the sand dunes of the Indian Ocean, 182 horses passed through the ring cashing in a record aggregate and new average high including a sales record of R1.9 million for Lot 72, consigned by John Koster’s Klawervlei Stud, to Mrs Liley.

The 2nd highest priced horse was Flag Man’s half-brother, Lot 103, Lord Wimborne for R900,000.

He is a strapping and eye-catching last foal of the deceased mare Irresistable Chris by Canford Cliffs, bred at Clifton Stud. He was snatched by a new name on the Buyers List, Vuyo, associated with the Van Zyl Yard.

Incidentally the Van Zyl’s have now been associated with 3 of the broodmare’s progeny – Admire Me, Flag Man and Lord Wimborne.

Amongst the sires, One World continues to set the SA Horseracing world alight with an impressive sale topped with Lot 162, out of a Frankel mare, fetching R700 000 from JASM Solutions for Klawervlei Stud as Agents.

In another first, new KZN Breeders, Tracey and Philip King’s Jabulani Estates Stud located in the beautiful Coastal Highlands of Paddock in Southern KZN (a further historical geographical first for KZN) received R625 000 from Scott Gaskell for One World’s Lot 85 and R300 000 from Sterling Miller’s Pound Bloodstock for Lot 68, consigned by Clifton Stud as Agents. A dream start for the Stud.

Gimmethegreenlight continued his sire’s dominance, however heavily swayed in his favour by Mrs Liley’s record purchase.

The Top 12 Buyers (16.9% of total number of buyers) accounted for 50% of the sales total.

Conspicuously absent from the successful Buyers List, although in attendance, were a number of the large Cape names as well as the Hollywood Syndicate.

All in all, it was a great occasion, again executed and hosted perfectly by Bloodstock South Africa, that appears to have been concluded without a glitch generating a warm jovial mood on the day ahead of what was a bumper Hollywoodbets Durban July.
