Accuracy Not Negotiable

'Integrity of information should not be classed as fuss'

AccuracyThe run on result of Race 9 run at Kenilworth 31 August 2016, as published on gallop.co.za does not even include all the runners who actually participated in the race, writes Rod Mattheyse in the SP Mailbag.

I am therefore not surprised that the detailed run on is not correct.

Will future formguides for I’lldrinktothat’s next run show as having run 3 times with its last run being a winner, when in fact it ran second last beaten some distance, and only beat one horse home?

That horse Shout sadly broke down terribly and is no longer with us.

I would urge all form students to relook the result of this race, as that is not the only error.

One on-line publication reflects I’lldrinktothat’s, form as having won its last start.

One might ask what the fuss is all about.

Integrity of information should not be classed as fuss.

Form publications rely on this information which is then passed on to punters – those people who spend a rand or two after reading the form.

The publications have disclaimers as to the accuracy of the information, and who can blame them since the source seemingly forgets – runners get  positions wrong and probably times and distances behind too.

I wonder if our handicappers blindly use these run ons? If so, their ratings must be suspect too, as after all it’s all about how far ahead or behind you finish in relation to the line horse.

There is a drive for transparency to curb perceived ‘insiders’ edge.

I say let’s just start with a little quality control on the information we already have committed to disseminate.

Gold Circle Commercial Executive Patrick Loker responds:

Gold Circle logoThe Kenilworth Race 9 official result from Wednesday was changed Thursday morning (1 September 2016) at 9:42.

This was as a result of an incorrect capture at Kenilworth Race Course on raceday.

Once the result is declared official and the all clear given, the TabGold website extracts the result and does not query the database again.

This was done on Wednesday and hence the change was not carried through to the TabGold website after 9:42 Thursday.

To alleviate this problem, where results change after the all clear, we have changed our system to re-query the SAHR database for results of the past 48 hours to update any changes.

Note that the first 8 runners were unchanged.

Ed The result as pointed out by Rod was posted on gallop/NHA incorrectly. The order  for race 9 was wrong. They were apparently notified by Winning Form and it was subsequently corrected. While we appreciate that the loophole has been closed from TabGold’s side, there was no explanation forthcoming as to how / why the incorrect result was disseminated from the track itself – which is obviously where the error arose.
