Summerhill is on the threshold of its Big Weekend, the Vodacom Durban July and its annual Stallion Day. Complementing and following the festivities this year, is a series of specialist lecture programmes, which forms part of the School of Management Excellence curriculum.

Mike de Kock - in the lecture line up
Mike de Kock, Jehan Malherbe and John McVeigh need no introduction, and we’re privileged to be able to include them in the lecturer line-up. Top of their games, they’ll be sharing their home runs and challenges in each of racing’s disciplines in which they’re involved. Add successful Senior Counsel Advocate Altus Joubert on the “History of the Thoroughbred in South Africa” to the mix, and you have the makings of a thought-provoking and worthwhile day in the memorial theatre at the School.
Alec Hogg needs no introduction either. Founder of the incredibly successful Moneyweb Holdings Ltd, owner and breeder of racehorses, he’s a career financial journalist. One of the first and only South African economic “journos” to regularly be invited to the World Economic Summit at Davos, and Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway AGM in Omaha, he’s a well-spring of both local and international economic information streams, and brings fascinating financial insights to the public.
Our veterinary contributors include Professors Alan Guthrie and Martin Schulman. Martin obtained his BVSc at the University of Pretoria and a specialist registration with the MMedVet (Gyn) degree. He spent several years both in general practise in the U.K. and specialist practise in South Africa primarily involved in horse and small animal reproduction. He has spent time in stud practice in the Western Cape and was Visiting Professor in Equine Reproduction at the University of California, Davis in 2005. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Section of Reproduction at the Veterinary Faculty of UP involved in teaching, research and clinical duties. He is actively engaged in research projects currently involving viral diseases and their effects on equine reproduction and as immune-mediated control of reproduction in horses and elephants. He has published widely in scientific journals and has presented papers at congresses and meetings both locally and internationally. Martin is actively involved and consulted both locally and internationally in a private capacity on most aspects of specialist equine reproduction and stud medicine. This includes evaluation of mares and stallions for breeding soundness and fertility disorders. Furthermore he is involved in aspects of assisted reproduction including stallion semen freezing and embryo transfer of mares. Martin has contributed extensively to CPD courses in South Africa on behalf of both the South African Equine Veterinary Association (SAEVA) and UP. He has served as Stud Health Committee Chairman of the SAEVA for over 10 years. A lifelong interest in horses and equestrian sports helps provide the impetus for his professional activities.
