Snitzel Colt Tops Day One of National Yearling Sale

Magic Millions on the Gold Coast

A colt by champion sire Snitzel topped Day One of the 2021 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale when selling for AU$500,000 at the Gold Coast today.

Offered late in the session by Milburn Creek, the colt was purchased by one of the National Sale’s leading buyers, Suman Hedge.

The youngster is the fifth foal for the stakes winning and stakes producing Hussonet mare Walk With Attitude and is a full brother to the group performer Spend.

“He was very unlucky not to have been sold earlier through the year,” a delighted Suman Hedge said. “It was just a timing thing for him.”

“He was probably the stand out horse of the sale for a lot of people and we’re absolutely delighted to have been able to secure him today.”

“Scott Holcombe (Milburn Creek’s Farm Manager) is probably one of my closest allies in the industry and someone I respect immensely and he’s always loved this colt.”

“He’s always held a special part of his (Holcombe’s) heart and when the chance came today to secure him we were really happy to snap him up,” Hedge added.

The second top seller of the day was Lot 1547 – the I Am Invincible colt from Serena Miss who was purchased by Waller Racing and Mulcaster Bloodstock.

The colt’s dam Serena Miss was a multiple Group Two winner in New Zealand and her first foal to race, Centimental is a group performed and winning juvenile this season.

Across the day just over AU$7 million was traded on 112 lots sold at an average price of AU$63,887. The clearance rate sits at a disappointing 57 per cent.

“I think it’s an extremely polarising market and the clearance rate is far from satisfactory and over the next 24 hours we’ll be working very hard to increase the clearance rate to a satisfactory level,” Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch noted.

“Buyers, agents, trainers and owners out there need to be paying attention to this sale. They need to be doing their research overnight leading into tomorrow because there’s so much opportunity out there.”

“On the other side of the coin, I think vendors need to set their reserves low and give the market an opportunity to gain some confidence and obviously give themselves an opportunity to sell these horses.”

“This is the end of the line from a selling perspective for the yearling market and it would be good to be able to sell a higher percentage of these horses over the next couple of days.”

“I think quality lots were still sought after today and that was evident whether it be Guy Mulcaster and Chris Waller or Suman Hedge, they’ve got an eye for detail and they’re finding those horses here and making sure they secure them,” Bowditch added.
